Summary
The Florida Wind Farm, located 100 km north of Montevideo, is set to produce 50 megawatts, which will effectively decrease the country’s dependence on foreign and national fossil fuel production. By 2015 Uruguay plans to install 1,000 megawatts of installed wind power contributing to the 30% of the country’s electricity to depend on eolic energy. The Florida Wind Farm, through Akuo Energy and Polesine S.A., will decrease the country’s dependence on energy imports, avoiding 62,782 tons of CO2 every year. In addition, this wind farm benefits the local economy by providing with a total investment of 40% equal to US $80 million on local production. The project has also developed strong stakeholder engagement processes, and will contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of nearby communities through social infrastructure upgrading.
